Autism and Employment Issues: A Panel Discussion [CRC Session]

Many adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) report unemployment or underemployment as a major problem. This panel presents two views from people with ASD, employer expectations and perspectives, and ideas to identify the needed support strategies to promote self-determination and successful employment.
Learning Objectives:
- • Discuss what works well regarding employment for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) recognize the perspective from adults with ASD who are dealing with these issues and be able to prepare traditional job coaches to be “social coaches” to effectively support workers with ASD.
- • Discuss barriers to employment for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and how to demonstrate to employers the importance of creating and maintaining a disability and inclusion plan that promotes an inclusive environment.
- • Predict the impact that OFCCP’s Section 503 regulations will have on employers and their plan to recruit workers with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
