Professionals need to understand how to get a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) what they need with the new DSM-5. Autism professionals will learn: creative ways to help the child with ASD to receive affordable services with or without insurance coverage. Learn to think like an insurance Case Manager. Cheryl Zmijewski RN. I have almost 20 years of nursing experience in all areas of nursing.  I have worked in private and public (Medicare and Medicaid) case management for six years plus.

With my experience as a Medicaid and Medicare along with private insurance Nurse Case Management, I will go over the changes in the new DSM-5 for autism and share my professional solutions for creatively providing treatment for those who no longer qualify for autism coverage, who will still need services for behaviors and symptoms of autism..

  1. I will talk about what children will be covered.
  2. I will talk about how long children receiving present services will be covered (from an RN Case Manager point of view).
  3. I will talk about goal evaluation once treatment has started, and what the goals will be.  A case manager will not be concerned with the same things regarding autism that they were previously concerned with.
  4. I will talk about when treatment will stop, with the new narrow definition of autism.
  5. I will talk about how parents can get help for their child paid for by their insurance company, once they have reached autism goals.
  6. I will talk about using medical diagnosis instead of autism.
  7. Using services in the community to help your child who no longer qualifies for an autism spectrum diagnosis.
  8. How to get the most bang for your buck on therapy and treatment you know your child needs.
  9. How not to use up all your psy. Bucks in the insurance pool.
  10. The schools responsibility for treating your child with autism.
  11. Using your PCP to help you when you need help getting insurance to pay for therapy for your child.
  12.  How to get Medicaid to cover expenses for your child’s autism treatment.
  13.  And, much more of my pearls of wisdom in my area of expertise.

Learning Objectives:

  • For the attendees, to be able to explain the new DSM-5 and what is defined as the autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The objective being that: the group will be able to identify what "symptoms" are classified as ASD.
  • The group will recognize the way an RN case manager looks at a case for an insurance company. The objective will be: being able to comprehend how to approach an insurance company case manager to get services approved.
  • Discovering creative ways to pay for needed autism spectrum disorder (ASD) treatment that does not qualify through DSM-5 for state insurance coverage by using: medical diagnosis, community service, and pooled resources. The objective is to determine the best treatment for ASD without going bankrupt.
