7278 The ASD Social Network Movement [CRC Session]

Friday, July 25, 2014: 4:00 PM-5:15 PM
204 (Indiana Convention Center)
Facebook has an infinite amount of potential when it comes to helping our community. In this session the evolution of the autism spectrum disorder (ASD) community’s involvement in social media will be discussed. It will also dig deeper into how our organization was able to reach over 1 million Facebook followers. With a strong background in marketing from my undergraduate work at Seton Hall University, my goal through this session is to help our autism community succeed on Facebook when it comes to promotion. Currently I work as a Social Marketing Coordinator at Autism Speaks where we have just exceeded 1.1 million followers on Facebook.

The session would be broken down into three parts…

1. Functions of these networks

  • Definition and Breakdown of Facebook
  • What is Facebook?
  • Definition
  • History
  • When it was founded
  • What are some of the other leading social networks out there today

2. How our autism community has used Facebook so far

  • My professional and personal experiences using it
  • As a Self-Advocate: (Ex: Kerry Magro Fan Page- 2,900 Likes)
  • Through working with Autism Speaks (Ex: Autism Speaks Fan Page- 1.1 Million Likes)
  • How our community uses it (Facebook Fan Pages, Groups, Personal Profiles)

3. How you can use these networks to promote the audiences respective causes

  • How to get started (Creating an account, What goals you should start)
  • Posts (Statuses, Videos, Pictures, Links, Sharing, Paid Promotions, Creating Events, Creating Facebook Apps)
  • Frequency (How many times you should post per day. What are the best times in a day, week, month, and year to post specific content to see the most impressions/engagement.)
  • How to gauge your success [Facebook Statistics: (Impressions- How many people viewed each post), (Engagement: Likes, Shares, Comments), (New Likes to Your Page)] [Third Party Statistic Sites: Adobe Social, Hootsuite, Meltwater Buzz]
