Online Education and the Adult Learner with Autism

This presentation will cover the supports available for the adult learner with an autism spectrum disorder in online higher education. The presentation will include current research, legislation and statistics concerning individuals entering the adult transition phase of their lives, and online higher education opportunities. Focus will be placed on accessing supports; self-advocacy; and online communication between peers, faculty, and university personnel.
Learning Objectives:
- Participants will gain knowledge of current online education supports and how these supports impact the educational experience of the online adult learner with autism.
- Participants will gain an awareness of how to advocate and access available supports in the online education environment.
- Participants will gain an awareness of the various Web 2.0 tools and technologies available for the online education environment.

Nichole Hope-Moore has a teenage son with autism, is a U.S. Navy wife, and currently serves on the Board of Directors for the San Diego chapter of ASA. She is completing her dissertation on the supports available to students with disabilities in online education and teaches online for Ashford University.
