In this course attendees will learn how to set up a simple communication system to implement at home, in the classroom and in the community for the nonverbal child. Through a series real of pictures and strict expectations, a child can begin to discover that using communication brings results and reduces frustrations for all involved. Mrs. Franks will provide examples and suggestions to use in all environments to help establish and maintain a meaningful communication exchange between parent/adult and child. Learning Objects:

1. Attendees will understand components of communication

2. Attendess will understand how to foster communication in the nonverbal child

This session will briefly define communication.

The speaker will then review frequent communication weakness associated with ASD.

The bulk of the session will then focus on showing the audience how to establish a functional communication system with the child through a combination of pictures, signs and words.

Families will learn how to get into their child's play, learn to set up situations where the child must interact, and how to find and use motivators to get interactions.

examples of preferred toys will be incorporated into the lecture to provide hands on examples

Heather Franks has been a licenced speech therapist for the past nine years. She has focused the last five years working with children with ASD. Mrs. Franks developed First Exchanges, a picture communication placemat, which is a starting point to establish a meaningful communication exchange with the child.
