3833 From Lemons into Lemonade: Maximizing Progress in the Face of Shrinking Therapy Time

Saturday, July 12, 2008: 10:45 AM-12:00 PM
Daytona 2 (Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center)
This presentation meets the realities of decreased therapeutic services head-on by presenting easy-to-implement modifications to standard speech-language therapy that utilize collaboration and maximize functional skill-building for individuals with ASD. While not a replacement for direct therapeutic services, these modifications can not only help to maximize limited therapy time, but also increase positive outcomes for students on the spectrum. They can also go a long way toward promoting generalization and maintenance of skills.

Learning Objectives:

  • List three reasons for the generalized decline in the intensity of speech therapy services
  • Describe three functional skills that may be a focus of a child's therapeutic communication program
  • Describe three ways to involve parents, teachers, and other team members in the therapeutic process
  • Describe two therapeutic group activities/procedures that capitalize on functional gain and collaboration

Content Area: Communication
