Bullying can be a lifelong concern for our loved ones with developmental disabilities. This presentation will offer a first-hand account of a young man who was bullied as he was growing up on the autism spectrum. He will share tips for educators and students to take a stand against bullying.
Too many of our children are currently victims of bullying today. Bullying affects a student’s ability to learn and most bullying is unreported because it’s done while the teachers/adults are not watching.

Bullying can be a lifelong concern for our loved ones with developmental disabilities. This presentation will offer a first-hand account of a young man who was bullied as he was growing up on the autism spectrum. He will share the difficulties of having autism and not being able to express and defend himself.

Some causes and effects of bullying on our community and in our schools will be discussed, as well as which behaviors are considered bullying (including cyber bullying).

Some numbers that will be shared will include the U.S. Department of Education statistics on bullying. These statistics will range from how during the last school year…

  • A child is bullied in school every 7 minutes
  • 60 percent of students with disabilities have been reported of being bullied.
  • 1 in 10 students drop out of school because of repeated bullying
  • 1 in 7 students from grades K-12 are either bullies or victims of bullying.

 A plan will detail seven steps involved in taking a stand against bullying will be shared that should help self-advocates, families, and professionals. These seven steps will include

  1. Start the conversation
  2. Develop a plan
  3. Teach tolerance
  4. Increase awareness and acceptance
  5. Encourage self-advocacy
  6. Learn your rights
  7. Speak up

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants explore about 10 reasons bullying needs to stop today in our community.
  • Examine helpful tips to students with autism to empower them to speak up when bullying may occur and to encourage bystanders to help out when appropriate.
  • Describe 7 tips participants can take to take a stand against bullying today.
