What happens when the 22 year old with autism has "aged out" of school? Where will he find community and meaningful work? How will he engage in the leisure/ recreational/spiritual activities that make lives richer?   Come learn about an approach to intentional communities that can work across the country.
This session will cover the following topics (with co-presenters including property developers, service provider):
  1. Description of options (or lack of options) available to build a “meaningful life” for adults with classic autism after age 22

  2. Elements needed to create a meaningful life for adults with autism

  3. One approach to building an intentional community that:

    1. Meets the needs of the residents

    2. Provides for “aging in place”

    3. Answers the need of regulators for an inclusive environment

    4. Is financially self-sustaining under the current funding streams flowing to adults with classic autism

  4. Tapping into resources available in the community:

    1. Case Management

    2. Service Providers

    3. Vocational Providers

    4. Rec/leisure opportunities

  5. Establishing a governance model

    1. Building a board of directors

    2. Selecting an executive director

  6. Designing the physical space

    1. Individual apartments

    2. Intentional communal design – cooking and eating and leisure

  • Examine the use of governmental funds to support independent living for adults with autism
  • Review methods to partner with local institutions to create an intentional community
  • Discuss the support requirements for an intentional community - as well as understand the "typical day" or "typical week" for adults in the community

Cardinal is developing housing that could serve persons on the autism spectrum.
