Toilet mastery is an essential independent skill for children with autism. Yet, reaching this goal is often difficult. Using extensive examples from clinical experience and a wealth of practical information this presentation will give participants the preparation they need to guide the toileting journey and manage obstacles along the way.
Mastering continence is an essential life skill for all children. Yet, for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, (ASD) and their caretakers, reaching this goal is sometimes distressing and often a considerable challenge. Teaching children to be independent at toileting requires consistent and methodical strategies. There are specific characteristics of autism that can affect toilet training, such as communication abilities, a need for routine, a child's learning profile and biological functions. How do these affect a child's readiness for training? What special considerations influence outcome? What are the typical obstacles to achieving continence and how can they be overcome? Toilet training for children with ASD requires persistence, patience and commitment. Once the decision is made to embark on the journey, everyone must follow the plan. This engaging session provides a systematic and comprehensive approach to toilet training. Participants will learn the elements essential to planning and implementing a successful toileting program: 1.) Determining readiness 2.) Setting up for success 3.) Recording data and monitoring progress 4.) Developing new routines 5.) Negotiating accidents 6.) Creating independent travelers
