Schools report that students are presenting more complex behavior challenges. This session will combine strategies associated with ABA and PBS that focus on promoting a student's full participation in the school community. Discussion will cover short and long term behavior change strategies, and the importance of teaching alternative skills.
Schools report that students are presenting with more complex behavioral issues. Behaviors are especially challenging when the student has co-occuring ASD and mental health issues. This presentation will include practical and real life examples, and recommendations for addressing behavior when crisis occurs and to achieve long term behavior change. The strategies recommended are associated with ABA and/or with positive behavior support. As a result of this presentation, participants will learn:

How to handle crisis situations with the goal of behavior de-escalation;

How to assess behavior that involves student input and that results in information that logically leads to the creation of a behavior support plan.

How to teach alternative behaviors and how to promote student success and learning.

Ultimately, creating behavior change requires the adults involved to change their behavior as well. Recommendations related to structure, rapport, scheduling, reinforcement and other strategies will be discussed as well.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants complete an FBA that involves input from the individual and addresses the underlying conditions surrounding the behavior.
  • Participants inspect methods that teach alternative behaviors with a focus on enhancing inclusion and improving quality of life.
  • Participants discuss the role of both short term and long term behavior programming.
