Purchase AccessThis presentation is based upon the personal and professional experiences of the presenter in combination with reading and research on the subject. After a thorough discussion of the unique aspects and considerations of aging in those with autism, the presenter will offer strategies for helping the person with ASD adapt to their aging process. Pointers will be given to caregivers concerning positive self-care. The purpose of this presentation is to highlight the unique aspects of the aging process in those with autism over age 65. This topic is very timely, due to the ever-increasing numbers of individuals with autism in this age group. Since current laws and best practices are resulting in more independent living situations, caregivers need to be given pertinent strategies. Although there are a few ongoing studies of autism and age, most are directed at those over school age, but few are aimed over the age of 65. I have discovered and applied positive strategies that are helping others whom I advise and my own spouse in making the most of later years. Since the techniques are simple and understandable to the lay population, they can be easily implemented by family and other caregivers. Information will be presented to outline further sources of information and support for caregivers.
Suggestions for success will be offered and discussed. At least 15 minutes will be allowed for questions.
