Taught by a hygienist and a mom of a child with autism. This course is packed full of practical information that will make brushing, flossing and dental visits easier. Discussion will include desensitization methods, alternatives to flossing, introduction of dental procedures and insurance codes and an overview of strategies to positively influence oral bacteria. As a dental hygienist I understand oral health and the implications poor oral health can have on whole body health. As an autism Mom to a non-verbal child with moderate-severe autism I also understand how difficult it can be to effectively clean my child’s teeth. This two-hour course addresses many of the concerns parents and caregivers have about the dental health of their loved one. Topics included in the discussion will be:
  • Strategies to desensitize the individual with autism to tooth brushing and interdental cleaning (“flossing”)
  • Alternatives to flossing
  • Strategies to change the bacterial balance to a more healthy state by using natural remedies i.e. xylitol and probiotics
  • Discuss foods that are naturally anti-cariogenic (fight cavities)
  • Discuss different drinks (soda, juice etc) and how they affect the teeth and how to make small changes that can have a big impact
  • Importance of baby teeth
  • Basic introduction to the disease process in the mouth (cavities and gum disease) and how to prevent it or slow the disease process
  • Define strategies and demonstrate a plan to desensitize the individual to the dental office
  • Empower participants with knowledge that will give them greater confidence to make informed decisions and develop a relationship with their dental provider.
  • Briefly discuss dental insurance. What it will pay for, what it will not cover, how to maximize benefits etc.
  • Showcase apps that are available including social stories and videos that deal specifically with dental care
  • How to incorporate a visual schedule and behavior supports during the dental appointment
  • How to develop a positive relationship with your dentist

My course will involve the use of a PowerPoint that will include pictures and videos to demonstrate strategies in practice. I intend on bringing samples of different products for participants to see. As an experienced speaker I understand what it takes to demonstrate different products on the market without promoting a specific product. I do not work with any of the companies that sell products I demonstrate. I make it a priority to allow audience members time to ask questions and will do my best to make sure they get sufficient feedback including emailing articles, videos, information etc. following the course.

My professional experience has allowed me to work with and successfully desensitize dozens of individuals on the autism spectrum to the dental environment including many who were non-verbal.  I am happy to say I was successful in providing preventative care without the use of sedation or general anesthesia in most cases. I have taught continuing education courses at large national dental hygiene conferences and have personally reached over 14,000 dental providers with spoken and written training courses on treating patients with autism in the dental environment.  I feel a strong desire to take my message to parents and caregivers.  Oral health is critical to whole body health. Sensory challenges, dietary restrictions, and uninformed parents and caregivers make individuals with autism more susceptible to dental disease. I am passionate about making a positive difference in the community.

Learning Objectives:

  • Demonstrate desensitization methods for a successful dental visit and improved care at home
  • • Review the basic understanding of dental procedures and dental insurance that will empower the family and caregiver to make informed decisions
  • Select strategies to decrease and prevent cavities and gum disease
