Autism, Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice [CRC Session]

This panel will outline how adolescents and young adults with autism spectrum disorder may be at risk for involvement in the criminal justice system. It will include case examples from law enforcement and outline the scope and complexities involved in both understanding the potential problem and what solutions to use when an individual enters the criminal justice system.
Learning Objectives:
- • Participants will be able to recognize areas of potential need and risk when common symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and developmental disorders are observed and be able to apply individualized support approaches for offenders.
- • Participant will better recognize social skill deficits and be able to cite problems that can evolve/be avoided.
- • Participants will be able to identify techniques for working with teens and young adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) before and when there are problems with emotional regulation, perspective taking, and coping related issues due to over stimulation.

Sargent Jimmy Donohoe is the creator of the Take Me Home program, a database where participants who are unable to properly identify themselves register with a photo, physical description and contact information so first responders can interact with increased knowledge when contact with a person with autism occurs.

He’s published papers on the involvement of ASD adolescents with criminal justice and methods to proactively prevent such involvement through innovative programs.
