A Multi-Sensory Approach to Improving Function In Children with Autism

This presentation will introduce participants to the Integrated Listening Systems’ (iLs) combined multisensory approach to improving behavior and function as well as present recent research on the effectiveness of this intervention approach with children with autism. The neurological basis for the iLs program as well as the neurological and functional connections between auditory functioning, behavior, attention, focus, impulse control and emotional regulation will be described.
Learning Objectives:
- Participants will be able to describe the neurological foundations of the Integrated Listening System program.
- Participants will be able to describe the relation of multi-sensory processing to improvements in higher brain functions including behavior.
- Participants will be able to describe the results of a multi-site intervention study utilizing the iLs program with children with autism.
- Participants will be able to describe the results of a practitioner survey on outcomes of the iLs program with children with autism.

Dr. May-Benson has 30 years experience as a clinician, speaker and researcher. She is an international expert in the assessment and intervention of praxis and sensory integration in individuals with autism. She has completed numerous research projects related to sensory integration and published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters.

Dr. Minson, an authority on clinical application of sound, received his degree from UCLA School of Medicine and is board-certified in Psychiatry and Neurology. He was Chief of Psychiatry for Presbyterian Medical Center and Director of Behavioral Sciences at Mercy Hospital-Denver prior to integrating sound therapy into psychiatric practice.
