Two Dads - Two Lawyers: Special Needs Legal and Future Planning

The presenters are both attorneys and parents of sons with autism. This presentation will discuss legal issues that parents will, and must, encounter throughout their lifetimes with their children on the autism spectrum. The session will address special-needs trusts, guardianships and alternatives, adult services, and planning for life after Mom and Dad are no longer around. The speakers will share their insights, gained both as attorneys and parents, on the special- needs planning process.
Learning Objectives:
- Families and Professionals will learn the who, what, where, when, why, and howof SSI, SSDI, Medicaid, and Medicare.
- Families and Professionals will learn about Special Needs Trusts, the purpose, typical mistakes made.
- Families and Professionals will learn about Guardianship and alternatives to Guardianship.
- Families and Professionals will learn about Letters of Intent, providing guidance and information to future trustees, guardians, and care providers.
- Families and Professionals will learn about the correct way to make gifts and provide inheritance for someone who will be on such programs as SSI and Medicaid; how to educate the extended family; and the imapact of the divorce of the parents on government benefits, and related matters.
