It’s a Snap! Simple and Effective Ways to Enhance Early Intervention Programming Through Music

Research shows many children with autism have a particular aptitude in music. This strength along with the behavioral momentum that music incites can lead to increased participation and success. Easy to replicate music activities to assist in speech and language, play, behavior, and social skills will be shared. Participants will also view how music can align with an applied behavior analysis framework and will gain information on the latest studies in the area of music and early intervention.
Learning Objectives:
- Acquire an overview of research specific to the use of music with children with autism spectrum disorders
- Understand how music can align directly with developmental and educational goals to enhance success
- Learn ways that music activities can be adapted within an applied behavior analysis framework
- Actively participate in music-based strategies designed to teach a variety of skills
- Gain a repertoire of music strategies for use in clinical practice, in schools and at home

Michelle Lazar, MA, MT-BC, is founder and director of San Diego-based Coast Music Therapy. Her agency has provided services to over 1000 students in both clinic and school settings. In addition to her music therapy background, Michelle is an Autism Specialist with graduate studies in applied behavior analysis.

Linda is the Autism Program Coordinator at the Autism Discovery Institute at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego in addition to being a board-certified music therapist with Coast Music Therapy. Linda specializes in assessments, behavioral intervention and supporting families through diagnosis.

Shaina is the lead therapist at Coast Music Therapy, serving children with autism and related needs through individual and group therapy, adapted music lessons, and consultation. She is a board certified music therapist with a baccalaureate degree in music therapy from Berklee College of Music.
