Intervention for children exhibiting early signs of autism requires awareness of the intense emotions experienced by families throughout the diagnostic/treatment process. Therapists can often facilitate interaction and functional communication, but are not always adept at incorporating parents into treatment. This presentation will explore the importance of shifting from therapist-as-leader to therapist-parent-team model. Strategies that match a blend of behavioral and developmental treatment philosophies to parent values, and thereby enhance the quality of family interaction, will be discussed.
Learning Objectives:
- recognize how communication disorders impact interaction and the grief process
- develop methods of direct collaboration with parents to establish effective communication intervention goals
- review early intervention treatment philosophies and methods of blending techniques
- establish early intervnetion strategies that enhance communication and interaction between parents and young children
- review dynamics of typical parent-child interaction
