Optimistic Parenting: Hope and Help for You and Your Challenging Child

This talk will cover new insights into challenging behaviors and how families and others can overcome them and effectively help persons with even the most severe behavioral challenges. Evidenced-based approaches to replacing behavior problems will be discussed and the presenter will describe how advances in positive psychology can help caregivers be more effective in their efforts to help those with ASD and how to help themselves lead happier and less stressful lives.

- Describe the role of thoughts and beliefs in parenting
- Identify problem and successful child situations and associated self-talk in parents
- Help parents identify the consequences of their thoughts and beliefs on their child’s behavior
- Describe the technique of Disputation to assess if parental thoughts and beliefs are accurate and what impact they may have
- Describe techniques to introduce more positive, productive parental thoughts and beliefs

V. Mark Durand is professor at USF-St. Petersburg and has published numerous books and research articles. His new treatment approach was recently validated in a 5-year clinical research trial. He is on the Panel of Professional Advisors of the Autism Society and is the co-editor of the Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions.
