Based on the presenter’s book, A Friend’s and Relative’s Guide to Supporting the Family with Autism, this presentation discusses the complicated nature of family relationships and the different reactions people may have to the diagnosis. Understanding is key: understanding what the parents may be going through, understanding ASD, understanding what is helpful, and understanding what family members may be feeling. The speaker is a professional in the field of autism and a parent of an adult son with autism.
Learning Objectives:
- The audience will learn about the obstacles to developing supportive relationships between extended family members and the parents raising a child with ASD.
- The audience will learn what things parents can do to help support their family members and friends.
- The audience will learn what things extended family members and friends can do to support the parents of a child with ASD.

Ann Palmer is an author of three books and the parent of an adult son with autism. She is a faculty member at the Carolina Institute for Developmental Disabilities at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. She has worked in the field of autism for 25 years.
