#2908- Sexuality in Autism And Asperger's Syndrome: Reaching a Greater Understanding
The sexuality of people on the autism spectrum is often a misunderstood topic. A wide range of perferences and responses are found among ASD persons ranging from those with Asperger's Syndrome to full-scale autism. Christina Adams, a parent and author, and Stephen Shore, a person with autism an author, offer a serious, fascinating and helpful look at sex and the spectrum. Their information will assist parents to understand thier children's feelings, physical responses, interest or disinterest in sex and provide critical information as adolescence approaches.

Presenters:Stephen M. Shore, Ed.D., Adelphi University in New York, Assistant Professor - Nonverbal until four and recommended for institutionalization, Dr. Shore focuses on empowering people with autism to develop their capacities to their fullest extent possible. Internationally known author and educator, Stephen serves as a board member for the Autism Society and, other autism-related organizations and is on faculty at Adelphi University.

Christina Adams, MFA, Author, Lecturer - Christins Adams, MFA, is the author of A Real Boy: A True Story of Autism, Early Intervention and Recovery (Penguin 2005). Her work has appeared on NPR and in The Washington Post and Los Angeles Times. Her book was featured in CHILD Magazine and nominated for several awards. Christina has a master's degree in writing and was editor of The Pentagram (the Pentagon's newspaper). She speaks and conducts workshops nationally about autism. Medical publications she had edited include "The Cornerstone Method: IQ Rise found in Treated PDD Children." Her website is www.christinaadamswriter.com

 
The presentation includes sections on: How people with autism and Asperger's Syndrome view sex; The reasons persons with ASD vary in their sexual responses and maturity; Sensory isues; social skills; sexual preferences; delayed emotional and social maturity, etc. It will also include techniques for role modeling, sex education and social/sexual awareness; information on social skills, opportunities for friendship and romantic partner development; and avoidance of potentially harmful or abusive situations. Information is presented by a parent of an ASD boy and advocate for kids with autism (Christina Adams) and a married adult with ASD and autism educator (Stephen Shore). A lively and interesting Q and A will follow, with many real-life examples asked and answered.
