#2567- Research findings regarding early intervention and adult outcomes in Autism- ASHA CEU Session
This presentation will review published reports of early intervention (e.g., behavior therapies, speech and communication therapies, occupational therapies, educational therapies, social skill trainings, etc.) of children with Autistic disorder since 1980. This presentation will also review all the published follow-up studies (also since 1980) of adults with Autistic disorder and their outcomes. The presentation will discuss the link between early interventions and adult outcomes. Based on the intensive and extensive review and analysis of the existing research data, the presentation will provide the information and guidance to parents and professionals about evidence-based win-win approach of early treatments or interventions of children with Autistic disorder.

Presenter:Luke Y. Tsai, M.D., and, Professor, University of Michigan Health System, Director of Developmental Disorders Clinic - Luke Tsai, M.D., Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics, University of Michigan Medical School; Director of Developmental Disorders Clinic, University of Michigan Medical Center; Consultant Editor of Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders; Editorial Board member of Research in Autism Spectrum Disorders; Advisory Board member of ADVOCATE of Autism Society of America; former Co-Chair and current member of Panel of Professional Advisors of Autism Society of American. Dr. Tsai is is widely published and his publications include more than 80 articles and 35 books or chapters. Dr. Tsai is the author of Taking the Mystery out of Medication in Autism/Asperger Syndromes.
 
Since 1980, the definition and diagnostic criteria for Autistic Disorder have been well established which has enable researchers to compare research findings in Autism with confidence that subjects in published studies were selected based on the same definition and diagnostic criteria.This presentation will review published reports of early intervention (e.g., behavior therapies, speech and communication therapies, occupational therapies, educational therapies, social skill trainings, etc.) of children with Autistic disorder since 1980. Since 1980, there have been some limited follow-up studies of adults with Autistic Disorder. These adults did not all receive the same treatments or interventions. Nevertheless, they all receive many kinds of early interventions that being promoted or advocated to produce positive outcomes in the future. This presentation will discuss the possible link between early interventions and adult outcomes. Based on the intensive and extensive review and analysis of the existing research data, the presentation will provide the information and guidance to parents and professionals about evidence-based win-win approach of early treatments or interventions of children with Autistic disorder.
