This presentation will overview the three-stage cycle of tantrums, rage, and meltdowns as well as interventions that can be used at each stage. A brief overview of prevention strategies that can be used at school, home, and community will also be presented. | |||
Presenters: | - Amanda Lautenschlager, mother of two teenage boys, currently serves on the S.D. Advisory Panel for Children with Disabilities, the Autism Advisory Committee for the Autism & Related Disorders Program at the Univ. of S.D. and the S.D. Mental Health Planning and Coordination Advisory Council. Founder of Autism Coalition to Increase Opportunities Now; information & support group for parents & professionals. Author of Specifically for Parents from Asperger Syndrome and Difficult Moments: Practical Solutions for Tantrums, Rage, and Meltdowns. - Terri Cooper Swanson, doctoral student at the Univ. of KS in autism/Asperger Syndrome program. Previously, Terri worked with adolescents and adults with disabilities as a music therapist and as a consultant on autism spectrum disorders. Author of research articles and book chapters, and presented internationally on autism spectrum disorders. Terri has been the Project Coordinator for the Asperger Syndrome Research Study at the Univ. of KS and co-editor of Autism: An Encyclopedia for Parents and Professionals; currently in press. | - Brenda Smith Myles, Ph.D. is an associate professor at the University of Kansas where she co-directs a graduate program in Asperger Syndrome and autism. She has written numerous articles and books on Asperger Syndrome and autism including Asperger Syndrome and Difficult Moments: Practical Solutions for Tantrums, Rage, and Meltdowns
