Our presentation describes the delivery of telehealth consultation for the purpose of increasing service accessibility to families and caregivers of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders in low-resource areas. We focus on methods that facilitate positive outcomes for families and increased capacity for professionals, with an emphasis on catalysts for success.
With the increased identification of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) comes a significant need for availability of effective and evidence-based services. While this is true in all geographic areas nationally, it is no less critical a need globally. Challenges regarding service access are particularly acute in low-resource areas in the United States and other countries. In recent years, technological advances have improved the opportunity for families and educators living in areas with resource shortages to collaborate with providers via telehealth consultation and monitoring, and a distance consultation model has become increasingly prevalent. These advances have, in turn, led to families and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) increasingly engaging providers from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada to support individuals with ASD, and while some succeed in contributing to sustainable systemic and individual improvements, many fail to create meaningful and long-term outcomes. For over 20 years, the Center for Children with Special Needs (CCSN) has provided consultative support services, training, and program development to families of individuals with ASD, NGOs, educational settings, and community providers. Utilizing a telehealth distance consultation model, we have collaborated with families and organizations in the United States, Europe, Southeast Asia, and South America. In our presentation, we will discuss the process and content demands of consulting with multicultural, national, and international settings, with an emphasis on pitfalls, barriers, and solutions that we have encountered. Examples of each from CCSN’s own consultative programs will illustrate key concepts, including methods and strategies to facilitate better outcomes for children and families and increased capacity amongst local professionals and interventionists. By combining the science of applied behavior analysis with effective consultation methods and an understanding of the culture of disability, the family system, and the social network, clinicians can be effective change-agents at the individual child, family, and organizational level throughout the world.

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss the expanding role of telehealth in delivering evidence-based services for individuals with ASD, including regulatory and ethical implications.
  • Review methods to incorporate cultural variables into the development of a strong consultative framework based on the needs and resources of families and caregivers.
  • Revise and implement best practice strategies to match the needs of families and educators in a manner that maintains the integrity of evidence-based services
