Safety for People with ASD

This session is to discuss how to work with First Responders and the 911 system. Topics for discussion will be 911 registration, how to interact with your First Responders, and how to prepare for emergencies.
This program is for parents, caregivers, and people with ASD to learn about how to navigate the 911 system. Safety programs will be dicussed. Ways to disclose ASD to first responders and how to register into your local 911 system will also be discussed. Safety products that are available will be shown.
Learning Objectives:
- How to connect people with ASD with first responders.
- Discuss safety products that are available for emergency situations,(disclosure, wandering).
- Learn how to connect with your local 911 system.

Captain William Cannata, Jr., Retired, has been a member of the fire service for more than 30 years, and is the Program Director of the Autism and Law Enforcement Education Coalition formed in 2003. He is also the parent of a child with an autism spectrum disorder.

Sargent Jimmy Donohoe is the creator of the Take Me Home program, a database where participants who are unable to properly identify themselves register with a photo, physical description and contact information so first responders can interact with increased knowledge when contact with a person with autism occurs.
