Room: 101A (Wisconsin Center )
The Changing Communication Needs of Aging ASD Adults: Utilizing Technology to Bridge Ability with Self-Determination, by GRASP VP of Operations Lindsay Ryan, discusses the contributing factors that lead to aging ASD adults losing their self-determination and self-advocacy skills, especially as their support system changes, and how technology fills this need.
The Changing Communication Needs of Aging ASD Adults: Utilizing Technology to Bridge Ability with Self-Determination, by GRASP Vice President of Operations Lindsay Ryan, is a relevant and essential presentation designed to emphasize the importance of communication of adults on the Autism Spectrum. Individuals with ASD may need assistance to communicate their goals, wants, and needs. For aging individuals with ASD, it is vital for each person to have an effective form of communication in order to relate their preferences and interests, especially as their support system changes. Each person should also be able to determine their day to day routine, effectively advocate for the management of their own services and supports, and improve their quality of life. These concepts will be explored in an engaging manner, utilizing video examples of a case study, and examining current research studies. The importance of this presentation emphasizes the need for aging ASD Individuals to be self-determined, at whatever interdependence level is appropriate to their own needs. With each aging ASD individual better able to communicate, he/she can be an active decision maker in his/her own life; the lives of each person become as important and valid as any other member of society.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify how self-determination and self-advocacy depend on the monitoring and regulating opportunities of one’s own actions.
  • Recognize that an individual’s quality of life is affected by their ability to communicate their needs, wants, and interests.
  • Identify how self-determination and self-advocacy change over a person’s lifetime.
