Come learn about the “Predictors of Success,” specific transition activities linked to better adult outcomes. A self-advocate and his mom who successfully navigated transition together will share real-life examples and insights that make the Predictors come to life. Learn how to integrate the Predictors into your own transition plans!
The National Autism Indicators Report produced by the AJ Drexel Autism Institute provides statistics about the outcomes for adults with ASD after high school, and the news is not good. The data indicates that adults on the spectrum are struggling to continue their education, find work, gain independence, connect socially with others and connect to needed services. It is logical to ask what can be done during transition to better prepare youth with ASD for adulthood and reverse these troubling trends.

Fortunately, the National Secondary Transition Technical Assistance Center (NSTTAC) has conducted correlational research to identify sixteen Predictors of Post-School Success (2015). The predictors are activities and other elements of transition that are linked to better adult outcomes. Parents, professionals and self-advocates need to know about the Predictors so they can actively and thoughtfully integrate them into transition plans.

This presentation not only identifies and explains the Predictors but offers real-life examples and insights learned from experience to show just how much impact the Predictors can have. A successful self-advocate and his parent/professional mother share insights learned from first-hand experience. Predictors that will be highlighted include work experience, social skills, independent living skills, and inclusion in general education. We will also discuss ways to “buy time” in transition planning (such as dual enrollment and deferred diplomas) so that students can experience and benefit from the Predictors.

The presentation provides eye-opening guidance and inspiration for families, educators and other transition team members looking for evidence-based ways to improve the transition process, helping youth with ASD have more successful and satisfying adult lives.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explore the current state of affairs for adults with ASD by exploring data from the National Autism Indicators Report about post-school outcomes
  • Identify sixteen Predictors of Post-School Success and concrete examples of the Predictors in action
  • Discuss methods to apply this information into your own transition plans and “buy time” for students to benefit from the Predictors
