Adults with high-functioning face many obstacles to establishing stability and independence in their lives. Drawing on his own experiences the presenter will explore what skills and strategies are needed for a successful transition to adulthood for individuals with high-functioning autism.
Transition is a very important and contentious issue for educators and individuals that care for a person with ASD. Transition, normally is a process that in theory lays out a plan for a student's path towards adulthood. Unfortunately, some school districts are fantastic at creating a path to independence, while many are not. In reality, transition as a process must be gradual, methodical, practical, and purposeful.

In The first part of the presentation it will focus on what transition is and how it works. I will then explain the importance of developing skills needed for transition for students with autism. This process must be started much earlier and in a very focused and deliberate manner. In elementary School students need to learn how to advocate and apply the concept of self determination.

In middle school students need to learn and apply skills such as; Organization, social skills and time management among others. When in high school the skills need to be reinforced and further generalized. Parents must create conditions where their children become more independent and responsible for their educational progress. During this part of the presentation I will give attendees common sense tips that will help make students ready for the transition to adulthood.

In the latter part of the presentation it will address both post secondary education and the work world. I will explore the various options that are open to individual with ASD. Attendees will learn about different programs geared towards individuals with ASD. I will explain the skills needed to adapt and succeed in college. People will also learn how to prepare for and interview and then secure and keep a job. In addition, they will see how one can create a more social and fulfilling life.
