This session will be the life story of Archie B.; a young adult with Autism.

Dr. Holmes will ask Archie about his life. The audience will get an understanding of the struggles he faced in life; from being a non-verbal child who received services at the Eden Institute, under Dr. Holmes’ tutelage, being a multi-lingual, honors graduate from high school and going onto College and, now Columbia University’s Graduate School.

Archie will describe his struggles through: his childhood; anxiety/ depression; social challenges; and, College/Graduate School.

He will describe the many social, behavioral, family and medical supports that have given him the capacity to carry on under very difficult conditions for him.

How he is dealing with his anxiety and depression through Cognitive Behavioral Sessions and concomitant pharmacological supports.

Archie will describe the significant family supports he has received throughout his life and how these supports are a life line for him when self-doubt enters his life.

He will also mention the importance of having Mentors in his life and how each has played a role in securing the successes he has made.

Not comparing himself to others is something that has bothered Archie over the years and he will describe how he has come to some degree of peace with that as he has discovered that “everyone has insecurities about themselves”.

Because he is very adept at learning languages he is curious about different cultures and how this interest helps him understand more fully why sometimes he feels like “an alien in my own country”.

Archie is very passionate about wanting to be helpful to others and wants his life to count for something as he advocates for those with ASD.
