9551 The Hidden Curriculum of Keeping a Job: Navigating the Social Landscape of Employment

Thursday, July 13, 2017: 3:45 PM-5:00 PM
Room: 102C (Wisconsin Center )
The hidden curriculum, assumed knowledge that is not directly taught because it is considered to be universally known, can pose a minefield of unexpected reactions and behaviors for individuals with ASD. This session will overview the hidden curriculum, discuss instruction and implementation, and introduce the concept of critical mass.
The hidden curriculum is the set of assumed knowledge that is generally not directly taught because it is considered to be universally known and understood. Its content is typically reflected in expectations, guidelines, attitudes, values, beliefs, terminology, behavior, and other messages that are conveyed indirectly through inferences and assumptions. Because this information is not directly conveyed, it can pose a minefield of unexpected reactions and behaviors for those to whom it is not innate or by whom it is not easily pinked up from their environment. Understanding and adhering to the unwritten rules and expectations of the hidden curriculum is important throughout life, but for adults it is especially critical in the workplace. This means self-evaluating, observing others, solving problems, making decisions, and seeking assistance, as needed.

This session will address the following objectives: (a) define the hidden curriculum; (b) discuss the impact on individuals with ASD; (c) describe evidence-based strategies that can be used to teach and self-advocate around issues related to the hidden curriculum; and (d) provide information on critical mass -- a strategy to ensure that the hidden curriculum not only generalizes but allows the individual with ASD to self-generate new information about the hidden curriculum.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the hidden curriculum that impacts individuals with ASD in the workplace.
  • Describe strategies that can be used to teach the hidden curriculum.
  • Understand the impact of critical mass on the hidden curriculum as well strategies to help ensure that critical mass occurs.
