What will happen to your child when you are no longer around to care for them? This session will help families prepare for the financial future of their child, or other dependent, with special needs. They will learn how to maintain eligibility for government benefits while still meeting the needs for lifetime of care and quality of life. This presentation will provide a comparison between "special needs" and "general" estate planning. It will also explore the concepts of guardianship, wills and trusts, and the Letter of Intent. Attendees will learn about the ABLE Act and how the account can support their child's future. The presentation is framed with my personal experiences as the father of a child with ASD and as the survivor of a 1975 car accident that resulted in 41 years of orthopedic re-construction of my legs. Consequently, attendees will know that I understand the challenges that are faced by both parent and patient.
Learning Objectives:
- Manage eligibility for gov't benefit while also targeting quality of life and lifetime of care.
- Explore guardianship, wills and trusts, and Letter of Intent.
- Examine the ABLE Act
Track: Life Stage 3 - Transition
Content Area: Financial Stability
