Remo Drum Table Activities Series: The Comfort Sound [Sponsored Session]

Gain an introduction and access to free, stimulating and structured rhythm activities for individuals/groups with moderate to profound developmental disabilities and autism. Have fun learning how to begin using music and rhythm based activities in the home or classroom to work on: social skills, education goals, self- expression, behavior modification and self-confidence.  The purpose of this presentation is to provide instruction and access to a free printable and practical guideline for teachers, parents, therapists and other relevant persons for effective usage of activities presented in video series and lesson plans. The content and activities are designed specifically to include adaptive music education, music therapy (by a board- certified music therapist) and fun recreational music participation. The guidelines, curriclum, videos are free and available online. Activities and lessons can be performed even without drums.

The curriculum, guideline, activities and videos in this presentation were formulated by George Thompson, Performance Arts Director at TERI Inc, and Terri Wiener, MT-BC, in collaboration with Remo, Inc. to provide constructive, stimulating and structured music education and therapeutic activities utilizing rhythm and The Drum Table with Comfort Sound Technology for individuals/groups with moderate to profound developmental disabilities and autism.

This multidisciplinary method presented provides well-rounded approaches that can be highly effective tools for working on: social skills, music and education goals, self- expression, behavior modification and self-confidence. The free accompanying videos are intended to provide a starting point for activities using rhythm and the Drum Table with Comfort Sound Technology in homes with families or in schools with educators or direct care providers.

The Drum Table Activity Series can be used to promote and facilitate various areas of development both verbally and nonverbally. The curriculum presented is specifically developed to address 7 targeted skill areas:

The curriculum and lessons presented are designed to be adaptive and modifiable to specific participants or group needs, even if they do not have any drums! As they progress through the lessons, participants will experience opportunities to refine and develop their skills, abilities, knowledge and appreciation in each section.

Learning Objectives:

• Provide a starting point for families and direct care providers to begin using music and rhythm based activities in the home or classroom. Through active participation, individuals will begin to learn (with no previous music training) how to help teach social skills, self expression, and self confidence using rhythm for individuals and groups with moderate to profound developmental disabilities and autism.
• Participants will be presented (10) simple replicable activities and will gain access to FREE printable guidelines, curriculum, (10) engaging and enriching rhythm based lesson plans and a (10) video series. Throughout the presentation, attendees will gain a deeper insight into the amazing impact music can have to promote and facilitate various areas of development.
• Through this presentation participants will: Gain awareness about music creation and expression. Have fun making and learning about rhythm and basic elements of music. Learn how to integrate music in the classroom and home setting. Increase usage of music and movement as a medium to build rapport and new communication avenues with students.
