1) Using the Ziggurat Model for Autism, we will demonstrate the framework necessary to create a learning environment for functional skill acquisition.
- Addressing Sensory/Biological needs as a primary objective.
- Making sure appropriate Reinforcers are present or accounted for
- Necessary structural and visual/tactile supports are in place
- Task Demands are addressed (removing obstacles)
- And lastly, new skills can be taught
2) Chloe Rothschild will share her perspective and present videos on how her plan and assistive technology (iPad and AAC) were considered during some difficult experiences, and how they pertain to each step in the framework.
3) Brooke will share experiences from her son’s Ziggurat plan that will present a different level of skill acquisition as well as how the framework can be used to remove problem behaviors.
4) In each level of the Ziggurat a different evidenced-based practice will be defined and presented.
- Video Modeling
- Visual Schedules
- ABA – ABC’s (Antecedent, Behavior, Consequence)
- Sensory Integration Strategies
5) Last, we will feature a different assistive technology (AT) strategy in each area of the framework. Using iPads, Biological Monitors (e.g. Spire), Visual Schedules (PECS and on the iPad), Adaptive pens/writing instruments, Social Support Apps, Communication Systems (both iPad and other), and Reinforcements (apps, social and more).
Learning Objectives:
- Learn to use a comprehensive intervention plan/framework for teaching new skills that works for ALL individuals with Autism, regardless of age or functioning level.
- Gain perspective from an individual with autism on the importance of approaching new skills with a comprehensive plan that incorporates a multi-sensory approach.
- Understand why Assistive Technology can make each piece to the framework more effective, increasing the success rate!
