Purchase AccessRemembering the Past: Concise, important history of the dehumanizing institutions of the past, success of deinstitutionalization, and how policy has created more choice and control of housing options for people with disabilities. It is crucial that participants realize that advocates can influence policy.
Present: Brief overview of trends in national statistics of residential supports from the 2013 State of the State in Developmental Disabilities (University of Colorado) and the 2014 National Residential Information Systems Project (University of Minnesota), highlighting the lack of growth and need for more research, accountability, advocacy, and development of best-practice resources.
Virtual Tour: Brief description, photos, video (as time allows) and pros/cons of the following housing and support choices: group homes, supported living in one’s own home, accessory dwellings, adult foster family homes, multi-family planned communities, and working farms/ranches.
Summary (handout) and overview of websites where participants can access their state’s information on LTSS, affordable housing vouchers, as well as explore various resources and housing models on the Autism Housing Network.

The goal of this presentation is to share the array of housing options while highlighting the best practices of specific examples from across the country that the presenter has visited. Participants will learn the differences of multiple housing options in order to compare and contrast available options in their own community, and/or be inspired to partner with others and foster a housing initiative in their local community.
