Faith communities often struggle to successfully engage people with autism and their families. This session will offer tips, tools and resources for all participants to help lead an active faith life. This session is for those who want to discuss, engage and practice being a self-advocate within their faith community, Participants in this session will hear examples, see videos and engage in small group discussion on how to best engage faith communities for people with autism. English and Spanish version toolkits addressing outreach, communication, religious education and tips for engaging all people with disabilities will be shared. Examples and tips for outreach to various faith communities will be presented along with handouts and resources for attendees. Each participant will leave the session with a short action plan that will be created as part of this session to engage the audience in discussion and idea sharing on faith-based outreach. The speaker has experience in faith-based outreach, expertise in the disability community and is a parent of a young son with autism. This session will offer new ideas and resources from a national network on faith and inclusion to help participants strengthen and engage faith communties as partners in full inclusion.

  • Describe methods to increase their knowledge of faith based outreach for people with autism and their family
  • Develop a network of resources for engaging local faith communities in their areas
  • Identify and discuss barriers to faith community involvement for people with autism and their families

Suzanne is the Executive Director of the Autism Society of Central TX, serves as a nonprofit consultant on evaluation and capacity building, and teaches at the University of Texas School of Social Work graduate program. She has worked as a nonprofit professional and consultant for over 20 years.
