Learn how to select apps to fit a user's needs, understand how interest- and age-focused apps function and create app mash-ups when developing instructional units. Learn how to match features of apps to the individual user. There will be a demonstration of effective apps to promote independence for individuals of all ages. Reviewing what’s new, what works and how to select devices and apps for students with ASD can be overwhelming.  Using i-devices to address real world skills in the community, classroom and therapy center can be a challenge.  Finding the right apps with broad application can be the key to success.  Mobile technology i-devices like the iPad provide individuals with ASD a unique opportunity for transitional support and independence.  Unfortunately many of those Apps being purchased are never used or are ineffective for transition or are being underutilized.   Methods for reviewing Apps by matching features will be demonstrated as participants are encouraged to develop a plan for individual users.  Apps will be demonstrated targeting independence and self-determination in productivity, social networking, communication, educational instruction, daily living, and social skills.

Participants will be able to identify the specific needs of individual users and match app features to those needs prior to making an app purchase. They will learn how to redefine apps and how to use them differently substituting i-device technology for traditional forms of organization, classroom and work output. Apps will be discussed and demonstrated that specifically address a range of user needs in the following areas: communication, data collection, video modeling, independence skills, social skills, transition and employment. Uses for these apps will be discussed including individual and classroom applications.
