During this dynamic presentation, you will interact with the Visual Exercise System App and actively participate in exercise. You will learn the exercises, structure, visual strategies and protocols of an effective autism exercise program. Be ready to move and leave with the tools to transform lives. Please note: the App is for use only on the iPad. Exercise, one of the most under-utilized and cost-effective treatments for individuals with autism, can provide individuals with autism the opportunity to build social skills, improve academics, increase self-esteem while improving their fitness levels.

Studies have shown that exercise can have increases in attention span, language, on-task behavior and levels of correct responding. Aerobic activity produces endorphins that boost an individual’s mood and give a sense of control and well-being, which can ease anxiety, depression, and mood swings, common hindrances for children with autism. Parents and professionals will be educated on this research and how to implement exercise, using the iPad, into their child’s or student’s routine.

Coach Dave has developed the color-coded Visual Exercise System (VES) to engage individuals in exercise based on the research that states, effective visual supports in early childhood settings include visual schedules to increase task engagement, visual scripts to encourage social interaction, and picture cues to support play skill development. Please note: the App is for use only on the iPad.

Learning Objectives

Following the Workshop(s) Participants will be able to:

 1. Define The Five Components of Physical Fitness for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders ©

 2. Give examples of visual supports critical to use in an exercise environment.

 3. Discuss and critique the research that supports exercise for individuals with autism.

 4. Learn the protocol of how to use the Visual Exercise System iPad App in an individual and group session.

 5. Integrate exercises, as sensory breaks, into their lesson plan or at home.

 6. Understand their role in leading a child with autism to a physically active lifestyle.

Exercise Objectives

Following the Workshop(s) Participants will be able to:

 1. Teach two activities (agility ladder & letter jumping) using masking tape that can improve motor coordination, as well as, language development.

 2. Set up a group, 4-station, protocol.

 3. Set up an individual exercise schedule using a white board.

 4. Demonstrate and Instruct the EC Ten (10 fundamental exercises to do with your child/student).

 5. Lead and Instruct a Group Warm-up for 12 participants.

Language Objectives

Following the Workshop(s) Participants will be able to:

1. Participants will learn how to integrate exercises and activities into their lesson plan.

2. Participants will be able to create activities to help improve expressive language in an exercise group. (Group Warm Up)

3. Participants will learn how to use receptive language through multistep direction activities. (Ladder)

4. Participants will learn receptive language activities to help a student understand their body. (Body Part ID)

5. Participants will learn how to facilitate learning of action vocabulary. (Roan and Visuals)

Learning Objectives:

  • Integrate the Visual Exercise System App. into their child’s or student’s daily routine for classroom activities and transitions, sensory breaks and fitness
  • Create workouts using three types of visual supports and structures (i.e. First-Then Board, Start-Finish Schedule and Stations Routine), using the Visual Exercise System App.
  • Develop a checklist of exercises that can be taught to children and adults, in both individual and group sessions based on a variety of abilities, that can help them achieve a physically active lifestyle
