Back to the Future: Realistic Steps in Adult Transition Planning for Youth and Young Adults with Autism [CRC Session]

This presentation covers the principal issues to consider in making a functional adult life plan as the youth will transition into adulthood. This panel will look at vocational training, adapting to adult environment and an evaluation of readiness for further schooling and level of independent living.
Learning Objectives:
- • Participants will identify the steps toward planning for life after high school for a person with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and be able to analyze the best alternatives for each individual.
- • Participants will be able to cite laws and regulations that affect individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) who are over the age of 18.
- • Participants will recognize the interrelationship between health, education, employment, independent living and community participation and incorporate principles of a youth-and-family-centered approach reaching for the highest levels of self-advocacy and community inclusion.
