In this session, an associate professor in special education discusses how educators can ensure that students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have access to general education curriculum and common core standards and the core challenges students with ASD experience that impact their ability to access curriculum and standards.
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) requires that students with disabilities must (1)
have access to the general curriculum; (2)
be involved in the general curriculum; and (3)
progress in the general curriculum. “The current reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act will require students across the nation, including students with disabilities, to meet the Common Core State Standards (CCSS)…” (
Constable, Grossi, Moniz, & Ryan, 2013, p. 7). The
Common Core State Standards Initiative is an education initiative in the United States that details what K-12 students should know in English and math at the end of each grade (Common Core State Standards Initiative, 2010).. The initiative seeks to establish consistent education standards across the states as well as ensure that students graduating from high school are prepared to enter college or the workforce. Students with autism benefit when involved in the Common Core Standards (Courtade, Spooner, Browder, & Jimenez, 2012). In this session, an associate professor in special education discusses how educators can ensure that students with ASD have access to the curriculum and core standards that is provided to all students. This session addresses the core challenges of students with ASD that impact their ability to access the Common Core State Standards. Evidence-based interventions addressing these challenges will be presented. These will include challenges in the areas of theory of mind, weak central coherence, and impaired executive function (Constable, Grossi, Moniz, & Ryan, 2013)
. Utilizing the common core, educators can create learning goals and objectives to propel students with autism in their academic success. An overview of how to write meaningful goals and objectives will be discussed. Examples will be provided.
