This session provides an introduction to residential/daily living supports for youth in transition and adults with autism. Subjects covered are drawn from the AGI Online Residential/Daily Living Training for Families and Direct Support Providers, a curriculum developed by a collaborative team of adult services experts from across the United States. We open the presentation with a look at the role of the direct support provider and why evidence-based practices are important to know in the arena of adult services and support in home or residential settings. We then turn to important principles in taking a person-centered approach to support and tools to foster person-centeredness. Following this we look at the traditional triad of characteristics of autism, then offer an alternative view of these characteristics as they pertain to supporting regulation (sensory, motor, emotional, etc.), including some evidence based practices. Next we look at basic methods of supporting communication. We wrap up the session looking at community integration and citizenship and some helpful tools for fostering activities, employment and more outside the home or residential setting.
