Transition for Youth with ASD: Transition Programming, Family Views, and Impact [BCBA Session]

The speakers will present data from an ongoing study examining the period of transition for 115 adolescents and young adults with autism and their families. Findings will be shared regarding transition programming received, family involvement in the transition planning process, and the impact of the period of transition on the family. Additionally, data from a comparison study examining the use of Person Centered Planning during the period of transition will be presented.
Learning Objectives:
- Participants will have an understanding of the impact of the period of transition on families of youth with ASD.
- Participants will gain an understanding of how schools are preparing adolescents and young adults with Autism for the transition to adulthood.
- Participants will discover the benefits associated with using Person Centered Planning in preparing youth with ASD for adulthood.

Bonnie Kraemer is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst-Doctoral and an Associate Professor of Special Education at San Diego State University. Her areas of teaching and research are in the fields of severe disabilities and autism, with a specific focus on families, instruction, transition, quality of life, and positive behavior supports.
Ana Duenas, B.A.

Ana DueƱas is a first year M.A. student in Special Education with an emphasis in Autism at San Diego State University. She is assisting in research on the transition to adult life in youth with ASD. Her research interests are in the areas of social skills training, family impact and post-secondary education.

Emily Costanzo is a teacher working with young adults with moderate and severe disabilities in a community-based instruction school. She holds a Master of Arts in Education, with a concentration in Autism. Her thesis examines how using Person-Centered Planning affects family involvement, satisfaction with transition, and outcomes.
