7 Students' Perceptions and Effectiveness of an On-Line Module on Visual Supports

Thursday, July 7, 2011
Florida Hall A (Gaylord Palms Resort and Convention Center)

In this presentation, evaluative data on the effectiveness of an online training module in promoting pre-service school personnel’s knowledge of visual supports will be examined. The sample consists of 30 graduate students enrolled in an “Issues in Special Education” graduate course. A paired samples t test was used to examine the gains on knowledge measure. Further, the students completed a social validity questionnaire that elicited their perceptions of the module. The results and implications will be discussed.
Visual supports are an evidenced-based practice employed with students with autism. For effective implementation of this practice, IHEs should provide training to pre-service school personnel on the knowledge and skills to develop effective visual supports. In this presentation, evaluative data on the effectiveness of an online training module developed by the Ohio Center for Autism and Low Incidence in promoting pre-service school personnel’s knowledge of visual supports will be examined. The sample consists of 30 graduate students enrolled in an “Issues in Special Education” graduate courses. The students completed a pre and post-test. Further, the students completed a social validity questionnaire that elicited their perceptions of the module. The gains in students’ knowledge and students' perceptions regarding (a) easy of naviagtion, (b) the aprrproapriateness of the amount of information, (c) the effectiveness of the information in helping them understand about visual supports, (d) the overall quality of the module, (e) clarity of the information presented, and (f) the appropriateness of the assessments are examined. The results of the study and implications will be discussed.

Objectives: The participants will be able to define the effectiveness of an on-line module in facilitating the knowledge of visual supports. The participants will be able to explain the advantages and limitations of the on-line module as perceived by the pre-service school personnel.
