This session provides essential information about autism spectrum disorders. Parents and professionals will learn to identify signs of typical social, communication and play development in young children and recognize the signs of autism. Clear explanations of the diagnostic criteria will help participants understand why their child or client received the diagnosis and how the person may be affected by their autism. Participants will be connected with local resources for screening, diagnosis, supports and services.

  2. Become familiar with the M-CHAT screening tool to be used at the 18-month and two-year well-baby visits. Five key concerns:
    1. Imaginative play
    2. Imaginative play with toys
    3. Bringing objects to share interest
    4. Pointing to shared interest
    5. Following the indication/pointing of others to share interest (Look!)
  3. Know the facts: Recognize the signs and symptoms of autism spectrum disorders 
    1. Indicators of possible developmental problems: Doing things that are unexpected; not doing things as expected
    2. Noting differences of concern
    3. Being objective in describing what is observed
    4. Facts about autism: prevalence
    5. Risk of under-diagnosis in the Latino community
    6. Definition of autism
    7. The triad of difficulties (social, communication, behavior)
    8. The concept of the spectrum of differences
    9. Three other simple ways to describe autism

  4. Understand the meaning of the diagnostic criteria for autism, Asperger Syndrome and PDD-NOS
