However, individuals on the autism spectrum and their families often cannot share that dream. In this presentation, you will hear how a camp was developed specifically for individuals on the autism spectrum. Summer camp is something that many kids dream about. Parents sometimes dream about summer camp as well, as a way to have respite from their children when school is not in session.  However, individuals on the Autism Spectrum and their families often cannot share that dream.  In this presentation, you will hear how a camp was developed specifically for individuals on the Autism spectrum.

Camp R.O.C.K.S! was created jointly by Autism Society of Indiana and Easter Seal Crossroads.  This presentation will cover how the camp was developed.  It will cover all aspects of a camp, from the initial vision to the actual camp experience to post-camp follow-up. This includes recruiting the leadership team, securing funding, identifying a location, developing the policies, procedures and programming, recruiting staff, volunteers and campers, training volunteers and staff, and managing issues as they arise during the camp.

Learning Objectives:

  • To talk about the reasons why a summer camp should be created for autistic children.
  • To give advice for others interested in starting a summer camp for autistic individuals.
  • To show how a camp can be started by individual, ordinary people just like the audience with the proper effort.
