Digestive enzymes as oral supplements are now considered to be a mainstay of any dietary protocol for those on the autism spectrum. An understanding of different enzymes and how they work in the GI tract is important to obtain maximum benefit. The participant should come away with a better knowledge of how enzymes work for different GI issues and have a feel for which enzymes are most appropriate for their child's particular digestive problems. The concept of using plant-based enzymes as an adjunct or alternative to restrictive food diets has existed for many years. It was not til the end of the 20th century that reliable enzyme products became a reality. Because of the well-documented gut problems associated with autism and other spectum disorders, health professionals now recommend the use of dietary enzymes as one of the first steps in rebuilding the gastrointestinal system. Enzymes have a long history of safe and effective use in the human population, yet many in the lay population have no concept of how enzymes work in helping digestion. Using known and accepted mechanisms of enzyme action, Dr. Houston will illustrate why enzymes work in an easy to understand format. This understanding should allow the listener to determine what type of enzyme products will be most helpful in addressing their particular digestive problem.

Learning Objectives:

  • To provide working knowledge of digestive enzymes
  • Provide practical advice for use of enzymes in context of general nutrition
  • Develop confidence in determining which kinds of enzymes are most helpful
