#3702- Common Issues in Autism Spectrum/ Non Spectrum Marriages
Dr. Donnelly and Mrs. Moreno are both involved in marriages that are within the scope of this presentation. Mrs. Moreno has been married for 38 years and Dr. Donnelly is a newlywed. Part of the reason she married her husband was because of, not in spite of, his ASD traits. The object of this presentation will be offering solutions for successful marriages. This presentation will be helpful to NS spouses of individuals with AS and for counselors. Cassandra Syndrome and its effect on those offering counseling will be discussed. Handouts will include “Advice for Spouses” and “Advice for Counselors.”

Presenters:Susan J. Moreno, M.A., A.B.S., MAAP Services for Autism and Asperger Syndrome, Director, MAAP Services for Autism and Asperger Syndrome - Susan Moreno, M.A.A.B.S., is the Director of Maap Services for Autism and Asperger Syndrome, and the editor of The Maap, a quarterly newsletter for families of more advanced individuals within the autism spectrum of disorders. She is the author of "More Advanced Individuals with Autism, Asperger Syndrome and PDD/NOS", a booklet which contains advice and information for parents and supportive professionals. As Director of Maap services, inc. she gives supportive information and advice to parents, teachers, healthcare professionals and others about all aspects of individuals with autism and Asperger syndrome. Mrs. Moreno holds a Master's Degree in Applied Behavioral Science from Valparaiso University in Indiana. She has been trained in neurocognitive rehabilitation therapy and has worked in this capacity with head injury survivors. she has two daughters, one of whom has autism.

Julie A. Donnelly, Ph.D., Project ACCESS, Autism Consultant - Julie Donnelly has a Ph.D. in Special Education and over 30 years of teaching and autism consulting experience. Julie teaches university classes and works for Project ACCESS, the Missouri educational autism agency. Dr. Donnelly speaks and publishes nationally and internationally. She is the mother of Jean-Paul Bovee, who experiences autism.
