#3290- Teaching Employability Skills to Individuals with ASD: A Synthesis of the Literature
This session is intended to share the results of an inquiry into the extant literature on teaching individuals with autism employability skills. The intent is to familiarize participants with the current literature on methods and outcomes for individuals with autism acquiring and utilizing employability skills in non-school settings. The synthesis was confined to specific areas of the literature that included those studies using single-case and group methodologies. The literature search was confined to the years spanning 1990-2007.

Presenters:Kyle D. Bennett, MS, BCBA, Florida Atlantic University Center for Autism and Related Disabilities, Associate Director - Kyle has worked with individuals with autism and their families for over 13 years. Kyle is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, Certified ESE Teacher, and Certifed Supported Employment Specialist. Currently, Kyle is the Associate Director for the FAU Center for Autism and Related Disabilities.

Charles Dukes, Ed.D., BCBA, Florida Atlantic University, Assistant Professor - Dr. Dukes has worked with individuals with autism spectrum disorders for over 15 years. He is a former ESE teacher and coordinator for the FAU Center for Autism and Related Disabilities. Currently, Dr. Dukes is an Associate Professor of Exceptional Student Education.

 
This proposed program is intended to share the results of an inquiry into the extant literature on teaching adolescents and adults with autism employability skills. The intent of the program is to familiarize participants with the current literature on methods and outcomes for individuals with autism acquiring and utilizing employability skills in non-school settings. The synthesis was confined to specific areas of the extant literature to include those studies using single-case and group methodology intended to teach adults with autism one or more employability skills. The literature search was confined to the years spanning 1990-2007. The review will include those studies that met a specific set of pre-established criteria. For example, at least two-thirds of the participants must have been diagnosed with autism and 16 years old or older. The session format will include a lecture by the presenters and then a discussion to include the participants to share impressions of the data presented.
