Autism Spectrum Disorders: Understanding Behavior- ASHA CEU Session*

In this session we will discuss the general characteristics of autism spectrum disorders (social emotional, communication, sensory, & cognition) and how these characteristics may present themselves in behavior.
Both lecture and interactive discuss and/or group work will take place during this session.
Strategies will be shared that can assist parents and teachers with promoting positive behavior. Such strategies will include:
-Priming
-Using visuals
-Choice making
-Social narratives
-Antecedent, Behavior, Consequence
Provide overview of the characteristics of autism spectrum disorders (communication, social emotional, sensory, & cognition. Each characteristic will include general overviews for ASD, examples of children of different ages and diagnosis.
Group activity or discussion will take place depending upon size of group. Although group activity is preferred. During this time each group will be assigned a specific characteristic (i.e., communication)and will be asked to discuss within their group what are some common things (i.e., grabbing your hand to lead you to what they want) that they might see with their child or student and then how these characteristics might effect their behavior (i.e., if you don't go with the child what might happen).
As the larger group we will get back together and discuss some of the common things they might see with children with ASD and then discuss how they might effect behavior.
Next we will go through several simple strategies that can be used to provide the individual with ASD the support that they need.
Participants will be given the opportunity to hear an overview of each support and then hear and see examples of each.

Terri Cooper Swanson, M.S. Ed., MT-BC is a doctoral student at the University of Kansas in the Special Education Autism/Asperger Syndrome program. Previously, Terri worked with adolescents and adults with disabilities as a music therapist, supervisor of a therapeutic recreation program, and as a consultant on autism spectrum disorders. She has authored several research articles and book chapters, and has consulted and presented internationally on autism spectrum disorders.
